Interview with RAMON
MAGSAYSAY
By Georgia
One might think that after
6 years straight of giving one's service to the Senate, it may be tiring
to run for a term of another six years. This is not so with Ramon Magsaysay
Jr. who is running for reelection.
What makes him want to
run again, and what does he have to offer? You'll find out soon enough.
What major issues do
you raise in your platform, and why do you think it's important to raise
these issues?Read his platform
OPEN AND FAIR ECONOMY WITH THE PRIVATE SECTOR AS PARTNER - recognizing
that much of the growth and employment needed to lift people out of poverty
will continue to be generated by the private sector.
With this vision, I adhere to legislation not giving favored treatment
to anyone. Likewise, I will endeavour to create an economic environment
without restrictions, subsidies, market distortions and similar trade
or investment barriers.
SOUND AND COMPETITIVE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT. As in the past six (6) years,
I will continue to file and anchor policy measures that will eliminate
some of the frustrations that aggravate business and investment by promoting
labor that is available, with the requisite skills, who are productive
and efficient; making the costs of business competitive; simplifying the
cumbersome and convoluted bureaucracy in particular where business promotion
is concerned; creating a swift and impartial court system; promoting the
idea that funds must be used to stimulate the economy and not utilized
simply on populist causes
How and why did you
decide to run for the Senate?
I would like to continue the programs that I have begun when I assumed
my post in the Senate in 1995. It would have been easier for me if I opted
not to seek a second term but I decided and I realized that I owed it
to the Filipino people to do my share in the efforts to make lives better
for the ordinary Filipino. I would like to help President Macapagal Arroyo
in fulfilling what we have promised to the people during the EDSA People
Power 2 and that is instituting genuine political, economic and social
reforms.
What are some pros and
cons about being a member of a political party?
Pro: The availability of political machinery. Con: Your
personal beliefs and principles sometimes can be compromised by partisan
ideals and positions on certain issues.
Why should we vote for
you?
As a re-electionist I can say that I have done my share of service to
the people during my six-year term in the Senate. I have given priority
to programs and projects pertaining to education, health and social services,
and livelihood opportunities. I have allocated from my development funds
P450 million for health and social services, P250 million for education,
and P75 million for livelihood programs. But the most important thing
that I am really proud of is the integrity and the untainted Magsaysay
name that I have managed to maintain, even as I ventured into public service.
President Magsaysay left a legacy of integrity and honesty in public service
and I do whatever I can to live up to this legacy.
